nathaniel newcomb

woodworker and sculptor, nathaniel makes original pieces from local discarded wood. he is informed by craft practices from all over the world and through all ages, drawing inspiration from paleolithic artifacts, neolithic monoliths, and brutalist architecture.

he has worked as a furniture maker in several wood shops, and has taught woodworking classes and monitored the woodshop at the visual arts center in richmond, va; he currently is pursuing an MFA in craft/material studies in woodworking at virginia commonwealth university. nathaniel prefers to work with wood in its most basic form, starting with the uncut log; his pieces always retain this original sense of gravity.
